DISTRICT-WIDE OPEN HOUSE

"INSIGHT INTO MASONRY"

2009

SEPTEMBER 4th 2009

I am very pleased to once again be on the District B Team to chair the District Wide Open House "Insight Into Masonry"

As you may be aware brethren, I got the idea for this Open House on the Internet. The State of Massachusetts noticed their membership dropping and held an Open House three years in a row. It  was very successful and they increased their membership by 4000. We have seen what it can do for us with our success of last year. I'm asking for the support of all the lodges again this year to put together a combined effort to create exposure for the Craft, so that all of our12 lodges will benefit. I'm a firm believer in advertising and getting ourselves out there.  The signs we have are excellent, the District Seal really stands out and makes me very proud to be a Mason. We have two months to promote the Open House, so let's work together and share each other's enthusiasm. Please talk it up in your Lodges. The telephone is a wonderful way of spreading the news and I'm sure the brethren would love to hear from you. My wife is on the phone committee at our church, she calls her list every six weeks to see how they are doing. She writes comments while she is talking and refers to them when she calls again. I can see great value in this outreach and would encourage each lodge to activate their phone committee. not only for the Open House. but as a way to keep  contact with each of our members. I am very pleased that our Grand Master acknowledged our efforts of last year in the D.D.G.M. Communiqué and is encouraging every District in the province to participate in a District-Wide Open House.

Remember brethren:

NOTHING VENTURED........... NOTHING GAINED

WE VENTURED..................................WE GAINED

"THE CRAFT" -    IT'S GOOD FOR YOU

                             IT'S GOOD FOR ME

                             LET'S SHARE IT

The idea of a District-Wide Open House came to me while I was surfing the net looking for articles on Masonic Education. I came across a piece on a State-Wide Open House that really popped out at me. In 1960, the State of Massachusetts had 130,000 masons. Their numbers slipped to 42,000 a few years back and they knew that they had to correct the situation. They held a State-Wide Open House three years in a row and increased their numbers by 3,000.

This really caught my attention and I presented my thoughts to our D.D.G.M. for that year, R.W. Bro. Robert J. (Bob) Brooks. He too thought it had a lot of merit and said, “Tom, Go for it!" Being a bit of a procrastinator, I did not move forward on the planning of the District-Wide Open House, and as the D.D.G.M.’s year was coming to a close, it was felt that we should move it to the fall under our new D.D.G.M. At this point, all on-line D.D.G.M. candidates were invited to a meeting of the Steering Committee to inform them of our plans for the District-Wide Open House.

It was at this meeting that the “Insight into Masonry” was created. At the Fall District meeting there were doubts about whether or not we should go ahead with an October date for the Open House, but our present D.D.G.M., R.W. Bro. Robert A. (Bob) Forbes, said, “Let’s go” and go we did, and the rest is history. Close to 30 applications were received. There are a lot of initiations underway in District B. Some initiations are even in groups of three on a Saturday morning, with a BBQ or special lunch to follow.

I am so proud of what “WE” have accomplished, but our work has just begun, as we now have to make sure that these applicants get a warm welcome into the Craft and are nurtured through the Three Degrees. I know how busy we all are on our journeys and getting a night “at home” is rare for some of us, but I really feel it will “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” if all initiations are well supported by the applicant’s Lodge and enhanced by a strong showing of visiting brethren.

Brethren, REMEMBER the CANDIDATE. Our Grand Master is encouraging us to do so, and I quote him now from the October D.D.G.M. Communiqué.

“NO ONE CARES HOW MUCH WE KNOW, UNTIL THEY KNOW HOW MUCH WE CARE”
