"There is no more direct way to save a life than to donate blood."
For Immediate ReleaseCanadian Blood Services encourages Hamilton area residents to donate over long weekend Holidays and long weekends traditionally a challenge for blood and especially platelet collections Hamilton, March 14, 2007 – As the Easter long weekend nears, Canadian Blood Services encourages local residents to make an appointment to donate blood and platelets. Holidays and long weekends are traditionally a time when blood and platelet donations decrease because people are away on holidays or busy with family activities. Making a blood or platelet donation before or after the long weekend helps ensure an adequate supply for those in need. “Increased demand and the short shelf life of platelets, combined with traditionally low collections during long weekends, make the need for donations during long weekends a priority,” said Judy Compton, Regional Director for Canadian Blood Services in Hamilton. “Because the need for blood never takes a holiday, we encourage local residents to make an appointment to save lives over the long weekend.” Precious platelets only have a shelf life of five days and having enough during a long weekend period is always a challenge. Platelets are collected from blood donations and/or specific platelet-only donations at 35 Stone Church Road, in Ancaster, and are used in the process of coagulation or clotting of blood. A single platelet treatment for a cancer patient or child with leukemia requires six to eight units. Platelets are also used to treat people who have suffered injuries resulting from traumas. Canadian Blood Services encourages Canadians to call 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236-6283) for blood donor clinic information, eligibility information or to book an appointment.
